Knowing the Boundaries of Professional Competence
Every professional has an area of expertise that defines the services they are trained, qualified, and competent to provide. The Scope of Practice helps professionals understand these boundaries while ensuring clients receive safe, appropriate, and effective services.
Working within one's scope of practice protects both the client and the professional. It requires professionals to recognise the limits of their education, qualifications, experience, and competence, while seeking additional training, supervision, or referral whenever a client's needs extend beyond those boundaries.
Professionals should never provide services that exceed their competence simply because they have been requested to do so. Instead, responsible professionals recognise when collaboration with another practitioner, referral to a specialist, or additional professional support is required.
The International Professional Registrar encourages professionals to continually expand their knowledge through education and professional development. As qualifications, certifications, and competencies evolve, a professional's scope of practice may also expand. Maintaining an accurate understanding of one's professional capabilities remains an essential part of responsible and ethical practice.
