Protecting Those Most at Risk
Safeguarding is a fundamental responsibility shared by every professional. It involves recognising, preventing, and responding appropriately to situations where children, vulnerable adults, older persons, or individuals at risk may experience abuse, neglect, exploitation, coercion, or harm.
Professionals have a duty to remain vigilant, recognise indicators of potential risk, maintain appropriate documentation, follow relevant legal and organisational reporting requirements, and take reasonable action where concerns arise. Safeguarding requires balancing confidentiality with the responsibility to protect individuals where there is a significant risk of harm.
The International Professional Registrar encourages professionals to maintain current safeguarding knowledge through ongoing education and to understand the legislation, policies, and reporting procedures applicable within the jurisdictions in which they practise. Professionals should never ignore concerns relating to the safety or wellbeing of vulnerable individuals and should seek guidance or make appropriate referrals whenever necessary.
Protecting vulnerable persons is central to ethical professional practice. Through vigilance, compassion, accountability, and responsible action, registered professionals contribute to safer communities while upholding the highest standards of care, integrity, and public trust.
