Fitness to Practise

Maintaining the Ability to Practise Safely and Competently

Fitness to Practise refers to a professional's ongoing ability to perform their role safely, ethically, competently, and effectively. Professional competence extends beyond technical knowledge and includes physical wellbeing, mental wellbeing, ethical judgement, communication skills, and professional behaviour.

Professionals have a responsibility to monitor their own fitness to practise and take appropriate action whenever circumstances may impair their ability to provide safe services. This may include seeking supervision, obtaining professional support, reducing workloads, undertaking further education, or temporarily stepping away from professional responsibilities where necessary.

The International Professional Registrar encourages a culture where professionals recognise that maintaining their own wellbeing is an important part of protecting clients. Seeking support is viewed as responsible professional practice rather than weakness.

Maintaining fitness to practise ensures that professionals continue to provide safe, effective, and ethical services throughout every stage of their careers.
